Mythological Mobiles (Click for Project Description)
Teacher Reflection:
Last year, we worked on mobiles with a focus on Equity. This year, I worked on a play, Sina & the Eel, in collaboration with the CA Playwright's Project at the Old Globe Theatre. I fell in love with mythology and with how fictional stories of the past could intertwine with the present. I loved the imagination that was at play when we thought about how these stories thematically tie together to the present. I loved how the mobiles turned out--they were quite aesthetically pleasing. I am a little sad that I didn't get to be with each group as they presented their work to the elementary schoolers for Read Across America.

Student Reflections:
Gus K.: In Humanities I feel like I developed a passion for discovering new things about different cultures. Every place has its own geography, culture, religion, and so much more. I really enjoyed hearing myths from different cultures and I also really enjoyed learning about the Sami People. We connected the Sami people to our mobile, and each of our 9 panels connects the the Sami and one of their myths, which is The Fox and the Lapp. I used a lot of new types of thinking in this project, I realized that you can discover and learn so much new stuff about a place based on it's culture/stories. The exhibition was really enjoyable too. Ian and I presented our mobile and story to an entire 3rd grade class. They liked out story and our mobile, but they were most interested in us and asked us a lot of questions. I think I had a lot to offer to the group and I would say I held the team together I think I did a really good job with the learning outcomes in this project and I would grade myself high on it. I did specifically good in work ethic as I kept trying and trying to establish equillibrium. I would say I could work a little on collaboration because I didn't get the very nest I could've out of my partners, but I think I did a really good job on the learning outcomes. I also demonstrated the class values very well and I think I was an ideal student during this project. Overall, this project was a very fun challenge that helped me grow a lot.
Sami C.: When reading Eurydice, the book contained many metaphors and poetic writing throughout the text, which I had to use my reading skills I have learned in Humanities to decipher. When researching our country, I had to use the research skills I have learned in Humanities as well. Such as knowing the difference between reliable sources and unreliable ones, and how to cite info in MLA format. When designing the art pieces for our mobile, it caused me to use the creative thinking we do a lot of in humanities, thus helping me create creative and symbolistic art pieces for my mobile.
Dani. H: In Humanities we learned a lot about different countries. We learned about their culture, the political climate, and the mythology/ folklore. The county that my group chose was Israel. One of the reasons that I was super keen on choosing this country is because of its super-rich history. Israel is known for being the holy land for more than 3 religions. So many historical moments happened there. The first tier has the flag of Israel, a synagogue model, and a Passover door. Our second tier had some characters from the mythology story we chose, the Tower of Babel. It has King Nimrod's name, the 7 sins, and Tower of Babel model. Finally, our third tier has one question our group posed, a symbol of pride, and a symbol of humility.
Andrew T.: In terms of what we learned in Humanities in the project, I learned a tremendous amount from reading the class books and researching a region. The class book, Eurydice is a story with a lot of morals. Reading Eurydice was really informative because we got to learn the basic lessons from back then to present day. Eurydice is an inspiration to my writing as it is a really creative fantasy piece and origin story. As for our mobile, our region was Asia and the specific country was Vietnam. Kaden and I compiled a couple of stories from Vietnam and learned about the origins of things in the culture of the Vietnamese. Especially a weird and quirky one about why ducks sleep on one leg which we chose to base our mobile around.
